Now You Know

So, I got together with my wife for lunch today, and we went to a friend’s house to pick up the Circus tickets she’d gotten for us.

While Jodi was in the house getting the tickets, Jacob is sitting behind me and he starts chatting (to get the full impact of this conversation, you have to imagine it in his cute little halting five-year-old voice).

“Daddy…”

Yes…

“Why do we need tickets?”

Well, so that they can tell that we paid to get into the Circus.

“Why are the called tickets?”

Hmmm… I don’t know.

A pause.

“You’re not the smart one, are you?”

So, there you have it folks. Factual and authoritative. Take whatever I say from this point on with a grain of salt.

:-)

  1. Don't Dads know everything? Here is a little ammo for that Jacob.

Old French estiquet meant “a note, label.” Having been changed in form to etiquet in French, the word was adopted into English in the 16th century in a form without the initial e, tiket. The earliest uses of the word in English were in the senses “a short written notice,” “a notice posted in a public place,” and “a written certification.”

  2. Heh. Just wait 'til he hits you with, "Daddy? Do you have the rules or does Mommy?"

    We both do, Honey.

    "But I want another cookie."

    Talk to your Mother, kid.

  5. That reminds me of a cartoon I saw once, where one guy says to the other, "Never be afraid to tell the truth about yourself"

"Because honesty is the best policy?"

"Because no-one pays attention to you anyway."

I've sort of adopted that as my motto...

  7. No, mom's the smart one. She knows everything. Go ask her.

This reminds me of once upon a time, several years ago I was talking about my hair going grey with my wife. My daughter Jaimie was about 8, I think and was in the room while we were talking, but I thought she was not really paying attention. I wasn't really too concerned about my hair, but was just musing about it. Then from out of nowhere Jaimie said, "Daddy, you shouldn't color your hair. The grey makes you look extinguished!"
